Applied to a job I was qualified for according to the description. Almost immediately rejected. Reached out for clarification, was ignored. Passionate about the company's mission, I spent a few hours mocking up a deck for how I fit into the role and sent it to the cofounders – they let me know I had been underqualified (I'd say to write better job descriptions then...) but they'd keep me in mind for future roles. Months later, I saw a role open up reporting to the original role I applied to. I was overqualified for the role but really wanted to be a part of what they were building, so I messaged the cofounder and he set me up with the recruiter (this fast turnaround was the only good part of the process). Next was four interviews and a challenge set, I'd estimate about 5 hours in total (3 of which consecutively in the middle of a workday – did not offer accommodation for this tough schedule when asked). I felt all interviews went well. I received a denial from their ATS – no personalization in any way. I was surprised because I had spent so much time on them – it felt like a cold way to be let down from the final round. I emailed the hiring manager for feedback and was ignored. I had assumed I was a strong candidate but they would have instead gone with a better fit. Soon, a recruiter reached out to me for the same role as if I hadn't already devoted hours and months-start-to-finish of my life to it. I emailed my original recruiter and hiring manager that this was incredibly unprofessional and that I was surprised to not be provided feedback or any personal acknowledgement of rejection. I'd seriously skip this company – it's pretty clear to me that they say they're building something to make the world better. I've been in startups for a few years and if it talks like a soulless venture capital operation, it probably is. At best they've demonstrated that they don't value feedback – which means I've dodged a bullet. Feedback is everything and it's very clearly not a part of their culture.
