I applied online and was invited in for an interview by the hiring manager. The first interview was a very positive experience. However, the second interview was quite the opposite. The second interview was with the hiring manager and her boss, an upper level management official. I felt like I was put through a psychological interrogation. I think the senior lady was too invasive with the personal motivation based questions posed under the pretense of "trying to get to know me". Ultimately, it is a matter of whether I can get along with others as I do my job. You don't need the workings of my heart and soul for that or to try to find something wrong with me. That is what it felt like, judgement while looking for what was wrong. I kept cool and professional so they did not know I felt as I did. I also was put off by the upper management woman saying she "doesn't want to hire depression and she didn't mean in a clinical sense." This is a human service agency who works with clients who suffer mental illness. You would think there would be a bit of compassion there and an understanding toward staff. I can understand not wanting to hire someone who is not positive and doesn't make the vibe of the work environment negative. However, depression is common. I personally suffer from it. When I feel depressed I am not outgoing, but I am not rude or unprofessional. I get quiet. Then again, I am quiet by nature anyway. I just was really off put by that comment. It made me feel like I could not be "me." Again, the manager was amazing. I would have liked to work for her, but if the administration is making that sort of culture that is not ok. I was offered the position, was told I had 4 days to think about it. I didn't plan on taking for days. I was going to get back within 24 hours. However, very early the next morning, after the job was offered (it was offered late in the afternoon), I was notified the administrator wanted an answer by the end of day. I wanted to give it serious consideration because I really liked the manager and needed the job. However, that also did not sit well with me. I'm still not sure how much the administrator would have been involved in day to day reality of the position. I really liked the manager, but the unprofessional, intrusive nature of the administrator and low pay made it a no.
