3-month process: Submitted application online; recruiter contacted me for a phone screen and interview. After submitting my design portfolio, recruiter contacted me with a website design test.
The challenge was to build a website within 24-hours using their proprietary design software, and to complete a series of questions related to the test. Instructions and expectations should have been much more clear and direct. For example, they should have specified that they wanted a very simple site, and not one with advanced features such as animations, video, slide shows (which took longer than the 24-hour time).
After the interview with the hiring managers, I realized they were looking for a beginner/junior designer who could produce 4-6 basic websites/day vs. 1 top quality, creative and comprehensive website in 1-2 days.
If they were transparent from the beginning about the role and website quotas, I would have simply designed a basic website for the test, or opted out of the process to save 3 months of time going through their applications, tests, and interviews.
