I maintain a rigorous environment in a virtual school by being both highly structured and intentionally relational. Rigor starts with clear expectations. Students know exactly what quality work looks like because I provide detailed rubrics, models, and consistent feedback. I design lessons that require active engagement, incorporating discussion, writing, and real-world application so students are consistently thinking at a high level. Equally important, I build accountability into the course. I use regular check-ins, progress monitoring, and timely feedback to ensure students stay on track. In a virtual setting, it’s easy for students to disengage, so I make expectations visible and follow up quickly when something slips. At the same time, I prioritize connection. When students feel known and supported, they are far more willing to rise to high expectations. I create opportunities for interaction, encourage student voice, and maintain open communication so that rigor feels challenging but achievable—not isolating. Ultimately, my goal is to create a virtual classroom where students are consistently supported, challenged, and responsible for their learning.
