This conversation was very discouraging. The HR Generalist explained that it would only be a five minute call and it would determine if I would speak with someone else from their department to determine employment. Normally introductory calls are handled by the representative that recruited you, then the next step would be a formal interview. I believe the person I had over the phone, misspoke and said that I would be reverted back to the first recruiter that contacted me. The HR personnel that spoke with started by merely stating the position I would be interviewing for, then asked me what my salary expectations were (she never described the job or the company). I gave my range, then she responded by saying that my range would be fine and also how low of range that was in comparison to what the company typically offers for this position. I based my salary expectations on a range that most entry-level project coordinator positions require and the estimate that Glassdoor uses. When I asked if the higher salary was an indication of the level of experience they were looking for, she said yes and basically explained how they were likely going to hire an individual with more experience even though the company provides training for this position. Furthermore, the job post and description (which I had to find on my own) doesn’t “require” previous experience, but states some construction experienced is “preferred.” I have construction experience so the entire dialogue about this didn’t make sense to me. Instead of validating my experience and reassuring me, she expressed that I might want to look elsewhere. I was very disappointed with how this transpired especially given that I was recruited for this position. If the individuals in human resources, didn’t think I was a good fit, they shouldn’t have contacted me about the job opening... After giving my feedback to the recruiter, I received an apology and was told their resolution would be to update the job post and indicate the amount of experience they were looking for. They updated it to say a requirement of 1-2 years of experience. I have 1 year and 6 months of experience in this industry. I was very disappointed in the effort made by the human resource team. If you’re offering mid-level compensation, you need to make that clear from the experience you require. 1-2 years of experience is an entry level requirement so this is still very misleading to applicants. Please do a better job of recruiting and interviewing so that people do not feel like their time was wasted.
