I applied online with a CV and examples of work. I then had a video interview, which was later followed by an in-person interview.
Before I attended the in-person interview I was sent a comprehensive Editorial Interview Brief, plus copies of the magazine. I was impressed with this thorough and professional approach, and also with the range of issues covered in the Editorial Interview Brief, which included a comment stating: 'We are not precious and are interested to hear what you would be keen to see improved if you join Insider'.
The interview was conducted by a panel of three, and in many ways it was more like being involved in a fast-paced discussion than an interview. Rather than someone just asking me a question, listening to my response, and then moving on to the next question, I was often asked to expand upon something I said, or explain my position further.
I quickly discovered the accuracy of the comment 'We are not precious' in the Editorial Interview Brief. The interview panel members were interested in hearing all sorts of suggestions, including more critical ones that a more 'precious' potential employer might have perceived in a negative way. The MD was particularly good at getting me to go deeper into my suggestions by asking pertinent questions that made me think. I found this helpful and I felt I gave better answers as a result (although this approach might have been less effective with an interviewee who was 'precious' about having their suggestions critiqued).
