I was initially contacted by a a corporate recruiter from Chicago. She was "impressed" with my resume and LinkedIn profile, and said that wanted to set up a quick phone interview. We talked for maybe 20 minutes over the phone - Just some basic info about my background, education, and work experience. The phone interview went very well, so we set up an in-person interview for the following week. She called me the night before my interview for a little "pep talk" and a basic run-down of what to expect for the interview. It sort of made me feel special; like the corporate recruiter WANTED me to get the position. In reality, it's just something they do for every candidate.
I spoke first with the sales manager. We talked for maybe 20 minutes about ourselves and about the position. I was the one doing most of the questioning, as he only really asked me one thing: "Can you tell me about yourself?" I think they're just trying to get a feel for your overall demeanor, which is fair. We got along well so this type of interview was comfortable. While I appreciated the casual atmosphere, I wish he would've asked more about my qualifications. I don't think he got a sense of my professional background at all. I then spoke with an account manager. She was really outgoing and friendly, and we talked for nearly a half hour. She was helpful and gave me some great insight into what to expect. Overall, I felt that the interview went incredibly well! I'm not going to say that I was "led on", but I was made to feel like I had a really great shot at the next round of interviews. ("I really hope that we'll see you around this office in the future!", etc.) I left the interview feeling elated.
About 4 days later, I received an e-mail from the corporate recruiter. I knew right away it was bad news if it was in an e-mail in lieu of a phone call. The message was just a basic, generic rejection letter. I replied to thank her for the notice and let her know of my disappointment, even though I respected the management's discretion. I asked if I could utilize this as a learning opportunity and requested for any feedback from the interview if she was at liberty, as I felt that it was a great fit and was curious about what I could have done better for future reference. This was nearly 4 days ago and I haven't heard from her. After feeling like we had made a great connection, this was really disappointing.
TLDR; The interview process went smoothly and wasn't difficult, but beware: this company came off as a bit superficial. If they're not asking for your qualifications, interest in the job, experience, etc., what is this company basing their hiring decisions on?
