It was not really an interview at all. Apparently a manager of some sort, found me through a referral service, called me late in the evening, and hung up when I answered, then sent a text message telling me the name of the company, the job title, and general geographic area of the work. I went on-line and verified the company information, and saw a lot of reviews about how terrible the company is to work for. The job did not appear to have been posted yet.
The next day, I called during regular business hours, and there was no answer. A minute later, I got a callback from a cell phone, and it was the manager, said to be driving back to the office from the job, who spent 20 minutes talking about the job, and especially how unreliable was the previous employee who was terminated the previous day. He gave me his name, and talked about his management responsibilities, but never identified his actual role in the company. There wasn't any interest in my current job even after I mentioned it. When I asked about the anticipated length of the contract, and questions about the job, I got the distinct impression that I was getting insincere answers. A couple of times, I almost ended the conversation because of sexist and racist comments, but by then I was curious about the character on the phone, and still need something to bridge the gap between paychecks from my current job.
When I accepted the job, I asked for a slightly larger amount of money because of the hours, the working conditions, the level of responsibility, and the risks of COVID exposure or at least having to quarantine for possible exposure. The manager had to check with someone, and called me back in 20 minutes and no counteroffer, no negotiation, just a no. And I am glad we didn't negotiate a mutually agreeable amount because it sounded like they managed by crisis -- reacting rather than by anticipating, planning, preparing, and doing. The manager lived up to everything in the reviews about how they don't care about the employees -- only showing up so that they can bill the customer and collect their money!
