      Software Engineer Interview

      Jun 19, 2013
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Portland, OR
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Jama Software (Portland, OR)

      Interview

The process began with working with there recruiting staff. This in itself was the beginning of what would soon become a series of the most rude and unprofessional interviews I have ever been a part of. The recruiter would frequently send emails saying she would schedule something or work with the team that would often lead to many hours of waiting with no response. When I finally emailed to find out the status I would find out things that i did in fact have a phone interview scheduled, but they didn't feel the need to confirm this fact that there team had selected a time. Once past a set of poorly organized phone interviews (and a ton of emails asking what is happening) we were on to the onsite interview. Here is when we go from a disorganized poor experience to down right rude and miserable one. The questions started off with a basic html and CSS questions which were fairly easy. Next were several other programming questions which could only be described as "Lets try and trick our interviewee to boost our ego" questions. After these series of questions the interview was basically over. In general the people seemed disinterested and like I was simply wasting there time even when answering something correct all i received was a dead pan look and a huff. Overall the experience was a joke asking trick questions just to see if someone knows the one edge case of something and then writing them off is a poor way to interview. This piled on top of a clear attitude of disinterest and not wanting to even interview just made the entire experience add up to being both the biggest waste of time and worst interview I have ever experienced.

We definitely appreciate this feedback and regret that this individual had a poor experience. Since, I am a "recruiting staff" of one, I was able to reach out directly and apologize, as well as continue to fine tune our processes. We are a start-up growing rapidly, we greatly appreciate the time and effort candidates are putting into the process.

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Jama Software (Portland, OR) in Dec 2019

      Interview

I had a very positive experience throughout the recruitment and interview process. I initially reached out to one of Jama's recruiters to learn more about the position and the company, which lead to a 1-1 phone interview with the hiring manager. Following these two phone interviews was one on-site interview that lasted 2.5 hours. During this interview, I got to meet five of the pleasant software engineers that work at Jama. This interview consisted of three "rounds": a behavioral question portion, a technical challenge, and a final meeting with the hiring manager. I was also given a tour of Jama's lovely Portland office. During this entire process, every member of Jama that I emailed and spoke with was very kind and helpful. Also, all members of Jama couldn't stop raving about their positive experiences at work and with their coworkers. Having not heard of this company prior to their job posting, I walked away from my final interview hoping I would be given the opportunity to work here. The only negative I can think of during this process was that I was given no information on how to best prepare for their on-site interviews. Otherwise, I highly suggest looking into Jama Software for your next job.
