Overall impression: Extremely negative "bait and switch" interview Context: I have an education background focusing in chemistry, and have decided to take my career in a different direction by seeking technical writing roles. The technical writing supervisor asked a number of leading questions implying that I was not qualified for the tech writing position, and that I was potentially even mistaken about what the technical writing field involves. Of course, this was never explicitly stated, but was strongly implied with their line of questioning. The manager could not articulate what specific desired experience I was missing, even when directly asked. Note that the only experience required in the position listing is a bachelor's degree in any subject. He stated that he was trying to "get in my head" to figure out why I was applying for a technical writing position rather than their various QC analytical chemist positions, due to my chemistry background. This continued on even after my initial explanation, and had the uncomfortable implication that something must be wrong with a candidate who seeks out unorthodox career applications for their educational background, to the extent that I was explicitly asked "did you just decide that you hated chemistry at some point?" It was incredibly bizarre considering that the technical writer role at this company involves evaluating why products are not coming out as intended, and then recommending changes to be made to the standard operating procedures to correct the issue. Overall, the position sounds like it involves more critical and scientific thought than most of the lab positions at the company, leading to the assumption they were looking for someone with a scientific background for the role. Following this, the second person I interviewed with was the manager of the QC/QA department, who explained those roles to me. I had given no indication that I was interested in those roles, and no one from the company had even asked until that moment. Overall, it was clear that they had never intended to consider me for the tech writer position, and only called me in to try to sell me on this alternate role.
