The secret I have found to getting a job with the city is to apply apply apply. If you think you can do it then apply after probation you can transfer to another department. Interviews are fine typical questions just be prepared to fill out your application again but this time on paper instead of on a computer and if you know anyone who knows you who works for the city not just family but literally anyone it can help move you to the top of the list in an application.
