      Software Engineer Interview

      Nov 29, 2023
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Los Angeles, CA
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Kernel (Los Angeles, CA) in Apr 2022

      Interview

Brief phone call to start. Round following this was a coding interview. The round after that was non-coding technical interview. What I was told to expect from each interview was completely different from what actually occurred in the interview.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Final interview had with them involved lots of unrelated, factual questions about tech, such as "how many cores does a Raspberry Pi have?" They seemed more designed to frustrate/apply pressure and less designed to gauge meaningful knowledge

      Interview

The interview process is highly dependent on the role you are applying. Which is great because there is nothing unexpected. We all know that all binary trees and recursion problems that you frequently get on interviews are something you would never use in actual work. This company knows that. So they ask you questions that are very close to what you would be doing if hired. Algorithms were not needed for my work just being reasonable and think of a runtime and knowing basic data structures was enough for my position.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Given some class and multiple objects of the class show that you can apply a dict to group these objects by some given criteria.

      Negative experience

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Kernel in Dec 2021

      Interview

Talked with a recruiter and moved forward to a technical interview. It was for an HTML/CSS/JS position and they asked me to create an app in React. I told them that React was not in the job description and they said "yea that's on us". So they CHANGED the job description IN FRONT OF ME, while I was literally still on the call.
