      Localization QA Tester Interview

      Jun 18, 2019
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Montreal, QC
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Keywords Studios (Montreal, QC) in Feb 2018

      Interview

First, they screened me by sending me a screening test drafted up in Excel to test my QA knowledge and linguistic skills. Essentially, it tests your fundamental interests in gaming as well as your logic and language abilities. Afterwards, I scored well, so they did a phone interview with me; however, I didn't particularly enjoy it. I have a BA in translation, but the recruiter felt the need to explain localization and translation to me, which I found irritating considering I've been translating for about 3 years, and I actually know more about it than the recruiter. Additionally, the test they gave me felt like a waste of time; it had really pointless puzzles that had nothing to do with the position and their grammar test was laughably easy. They offered me the position, but I turned it down because the pay was extremely low at $13 an hour and my interactions with the recruiter gave me the impression that the company doesn't actually know anything about translation and localization. If you perform a quick LinkedIn search, you can see that they obviously just hire localization "proofreaders" with bilingualism as their only qualification. Also, the recruiter explaining localization to me definitely indicated that most interviewed candidates probably don't know anything about localization and must have it explained to them. I would have liked to work for the company to gain entry into video game translation, but I felt like working here would have been a step backwards with regards to my professional development and earning potential.
