KSL came to Northbrook and I was so excited. I felt as if I was shoe in for the position. I live in NB, I taught science, I'm great with kids, I study education, and I make the effort to be professional with others. The interview process was unusual. They took a while to make contact with me, once they did Keith one of the co-founders interviewed me while sitting on the ceiling as I was looking up at him to maintain eye contact he asked some pretty peculiar questions. He asked if I had ever come to work hungover. As a college student who has had to pay for semesters, textbooks, a monthly cell phone bill, gasoline to get to classes, and monthly car payments all out of my own pocket he seemed to be living in a fantasy world where I could afford a crazy night out, alcohol, and reckless decisions. I'm not about that party girl life. He also asked if I had ever let a child drown as a former lifeguard. That was a funny question since I was an active drown victim myself as a child, and as a former child thinking I was going to drown at Roosevelt Pool in Glenview(Where sadly other kids have drowned.) without anyone to hear or see at the age of 7.. and it was by a miracle that I barely was tall enough to feel my toes touching air as I was upside down hearing all the kids giggling, having fun around me unbeknownst to my predicament at that moment in time. Luckily I had the idea to do a somersault to get my head back up over the water after some crazy girl pushed me off a floating snake into the deeper part of the water on the opposite side of which I came. So no I never let a kid drown. I know all too well that kind of experience and would never wish that upon any other person in the world hence the reason I became a lifeguard in the first place. I don't know how these were appropriate interview questions. Either way Shegan the other co-founder did display a sense of professionalism I could more respect and relate to. What I was dissapointed in was 2 weeks in advance to my start date(the day of a party) they said they would e-mail me before Sunday when there was a party to train. I was looking forward to it. I told all my friends. KSL did not reach out to me I went to bed devastated. I woke up to an e-mail saying to be there from 9 am-5pm. That seemed unreasonable for letting me know at the very last minute. I woke up at 8:30 AM and I had not set an alarm, eaten breakfast, practiced proper hygiene yet. It was extremely weird that I was e-mailed the very last minute after being put off for so long. That I will claim is unprofessional on both co-founders because even as a college student I collaborate with my classmates and remind them about what needs to get done if we are working together to achieve something in the class. We do not leave it to the last minute and we are the millennial generation older adults mostly talk smack about. I told them I was not coming in that it was not something realistic I could uphold, I said that to be polite. Truly I was dissapointed in them and regardless of whether someone is your employee or customer they both deserve the same respect, proper notice, and courtesy. Either way this experience with Kids Science Labs has inspired me to do something more. I won't stop working with kids in academic areas. I am designing my very own enrichment curriculum for a one of a kind experience for kids in the area. It is my start up company, and if KSL did not put me off until the very last minute I would not have decided to do so.
