I completed a phone screen with a recruiter. This was an interesting one for two reasons: 1)I thought perhaps they were having a bad day or year or something, but I've never heard a recruiter sound as low-energy as this one did during our conversation. I left the call feeling confused and cautious about moving forward. 2)My portfolio was not screened prior to the initial phone interview (at the end of the call, the recruiter mentioned portfolio reviews would be the NEXT step to weed out candidates.) It's industry standard to screen portfolios prior to any candidate interaction, and it bums me out when it doesn't happen only because it takes me hours to properly prepare for interviews (yep, even the initial phone screen.) It would be ideal if a hiring manager could take a quick peek beforehand, as it should only take a glance to decide which candidates are viable.
