I applied through college or university. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at Latham & Watkins (Washington, DC) in Mar 2016
Interview
The interview process for this position is long, strange, and not well managed in my opinion. I applied online in December and received a call (which served as a preliminary screening and interview) which led to me being invited to a group interview at the DC office in February.
At this group interview there were about thirty or so candidates that came from all over the United States (there is no travel reimbursement by the way) even though they were only going to select 15 to come back for another round of interviews and four to five for the actual positions. At this group event there was a presentation including former members of the program in addition to associates at the firm. Then we were split into teams and given about an hour to complete a presentation on the firm from what we had learned. After completing this task we had a "speed date" with the members of the firm, and went two at a time table to table. I found this to be one of the strangest things and received weird and irrelevant questions such as. "what's your favorite dessert? and Where would you go if you could go back in time?" A few days later I was informed that I had made it past this initial stage and was invited for a more formalized interview.
During the first week of March I went back for this final interview which consisted of three separate sections. The first two sections were with managers of different departments and they asked the basic questions such as what's your GPA, strengths and weaknesses, and why are you interested? The last was with two former trainees from the program and they simply took me out to coffee and chatted for a bit to get to know me a little better.
I personally feel that this process is too long and requires to much on the part of the candidate. I had to make the trek to DC twice during my school semester even though the firm would eventually only hire a fraction of those it invited. Additionally the firm required me to complete testing and write a paper to prove my capabilities and desire for the position. This required several hours of my time and I had already submitted a cover letter which stated my desire. The senior HR manager is also very disorganized and does not respond right away. Also the salary is only $40,000 until you are placed into a position, which you will still have to fight your other trainees and outside contenders to get! There are more thoughtful and thought provoking things to do in the legal field in DC that pay better and are also more considerate. I think this firm needs to make some adjustments and not simply think its prestige will continue to attract top student from top schools. Overall I do not think I would go through with this again.

The first round of this process is HireVue. The HireVue is just to get to know you better, nothing very challenging or difficult. Second round consists of a big group zoom. You will have a chance to meet people currently working at Latham and learn more about the position. You'll be placed in a breakout room where you will all have to work through a case study. There will be someone monitoring your group so you will be able to ask them questions if you are confused but you also have your teammates there to help you out. After the group activity, you will have some one on one interviews. I was really nervous going into this because I didn't know what to expect but everyone that I spoke with was truly so kind. They all made me feel really comfortable and seemed excited to learn more about me. Shortly after the second round was over, I got an email inviting me to participate in the final round. The final round was in LA but no worries if you are from out of state, the Latham & Watkins team is super helpful and they were able to organize my flight and hotel accommodations for me. During the final round, it was more one on one interviews. All the questions were just about getting to know how I worked in a team and handle different situations. After the interviews, everyone eats lunch together. They gave all the interviewees assigned seating and then other people that were already working there were able to join our table and talk to us. This was amazing because I was able to hear from individuals from different departments. One man that I spoke to, he was super sweet and he showed me an app that he helped create for Latham (which was so cool). Also, the lady that was in my in breakout room came and said hi to me while I was eating lunch, which I thought was really thoughtful of her. She didn't need to do that but I thought just the fact that she remembered me and made it a point to come talk to me was so generous.
Meeting more of the Latham & Watkins team just made me even more excited for this opportunity. Throughout this whole process, there was constant communication so you were always aware of what was going on. Latham & Watkins made this process very smooth and made sure everyone was well taken care of.
