I applied online. I interviewed at Latham & Watkins (London, England) in Apr 2017
Interview
I applied for a vacation scheme, which was successful, and then applied for the training contract at the end of the scheme.
The process starts with a written application, then a video interview, and finally an assessment day. For the vacation scheme, this included a partner interview regarding my motivations and commercial instincts and interests, followed by a document review and analysis in tight time conditions, and finally a presentation pitching an idea for which jurisdiction the firm should expand into next. I felt this process was fair, rigorous and sensible.
The training contract interview was less smooth. It consisted of a solitary interview with a partner and a junior associate. In this, the partner asked a lot of peculiar questions which I felt were largely irrelevant, but the intention may be to test one's ability to handle pressure and think on your feet. Ultimately I was unsuccessful.
