Applied in June for a position that had an October start date. Interviewed in September, offered and accepted position. 3 days prior to start I was told my background check hadn't came back and I wouldn't be able to start. No explanation was initially given. The HR contact was very nonchalant and offered no empathy to the news she was presenting me with. After questioning her she finally divulged that there was a backlog with Cook County returning their criminal checks and she repetitively kept replying "Depending on what it says." I had previously been in contact with this individual several times and had always depicted her as being pleasant and welcoming until then. She offered me no options on when the next orientation would be offered and was very dismissive and unconcerned with the information she was presenting. Needless to say credit history was a criteria in hiring for the position which was, Never mentioned, and the offer was rescinded due to the fact that I would be handling sensitive information.... When I informed her that credit history should be mentioned her response was it was on the application for the background check. FYI, There is a credit check disclosure, on Every background application. Whether or not an employer uses that feature is up to that entity and should be disclosed to the candidate upfront! P.S. I passed the criminal background check.
