      Senior Software Engineer Interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Level Home in Jul 2023

      Interview

The recruiter emailed me a few weeks after I applied. Had some communication issues around scheduling. The phone screen was fairly typical. I moved on to Round 2, where I met with the principal engineer. This included questions about my experiences. He gave me a better picture of what different Level Home teams are working on. I had a lot of difficulty answering his questions as they were abstract or very generic, and I felt unprepared compared to what the job application was asking for. We didn't get to delve into any projects I had previously worked on as there were only 20 minutes in the interview, and we moved quickly. Still, I was told I would move on to the next round and that the recruiter would reach out to schedule the live coding. (You get a choice between live coding and take-home) The recruiter reached out the next day to tell me they wouldn't be moving forward with me due to other candidates having more experience with the role's requirements. Overall, it was structured well but really felt communication was lacking, especially around scheduling, job requirements, and whether I was moving on to the next round or not. This was the overall structure of the interviews: Step 1) Phone Screen Step 2) 1:1 with Principal Engineer Step 3) Choice of Live Coding or Take Home Step 4) System Architecture Step 5) Final Round (Coding + Technical)
