I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Lightmatter (Boston, MA) in Jan 2018
Interview
The company is founded by 3 MIT graduates. They are arrogant and do not treat their potential employees with respect throughout the interview process.
1. They gave people the impression that they are better than them and they tried to humiliate people during the interview process. As an example, they gave people 2 minutes to solve for a very difficult brain teaser question that usually requires 15 minutes or more. The brain teaser is not relevant to the job.
2. The CEO is especially cocky. He was lucky to use photonic circuits to do matrix multiplication. This is a well-known fact of light except that he is the first one to use it for the AI application. Through talking with him, it makes people feel like they need to beg him to join the company. His credential is not all that good. He went to the University of Idaho for undergrad and the University of Washington for his master. Plus, as a founder, he took all the equity. Other people are just working for him so that he can get rich himself.
3. They really disrespect people’s time. In a typical interview, a company usually invites people on site for an all-day interview. This company asks people to come in multiple times, each time is 30 minutes. It is a complete waste of people’s day.
4. They do not reimburse anything for the interview even after asking.
5. The COO is a typical business guy. He does not know anything and just trying to get rich through this startup.
Strange interviews. They test your IQ with a weird question. Then random stuff. Interviews are graduate students and do not have much experience. For example, the guy was expecting me to write the analytical model for the fiber field outside the fiber into every single details. I said it will scale with n2/n1, but they guy corrected me that it should be n2-n1. A qualitative explanation was not enough.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
what is fiber field outside the fiber?
what is the waveguide divergence angle?
