      Software Development Manager Interview

      Jan 28, 2023
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Toronto, ON
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Loblaw Digital (Toronto, ON) in Jan 2023

      Interview

There were four conversations. The first conversation was with the recruiter where we talked about my previous experiences and the role. The second conversation was with an Engineering Manager which was a deeper dive into my past experiences along with some behavioral and scenario-based questions. The interviewer was extremely nice and we had a really good chat. The third conversation was purely technical with a staff engineer and a senior engineer. I was asked about "Operational Excellence" and the interviewers seemed happy with my answer. I was then given a system design problem. We also bounced ideas off each other and discussed how the design can be optimized further. It felt like a meeting you will have with your engineering team to design the architecture of a new feature so well done to the interviewers. The final round was with the Director and Senior Director. I was told before the interview that the interview will be conversational and will focus on "Operational Excellence" and some other behavioral aspects of the job. However, I was asked a lot of technical questions during the interview which I provided answers to. The interviewers seemed to be in a hurry and were not interested in keeping the interview "conversational" and the whole experience felt like an interrogation. They also were not interested in learning about my past management experiences. They seemed annoyed when I spoke about people management and told me to not bring it up (red flag). I was also asked what work-life balance means to me and the interviewer did not seem happy when I told them that I don't expect to be on calls after hours unless there is a production outage. I was later told that the team at Loblaw Digital worked weekends to deliver features recently because higher management made commitments. Working on weekends sounds like a HUGE operational excellence mess to me. Unsurprisingly, I was told two days later that they will not be placing an offer and the recruiter mentioned that the interviewers thought I was light on operational excellence which is in direct contradiction to what I heard after the technical round where I was told that the interviewers loved my answers related to operational excellence. It seems that the company doesn't have an internally agreed definition of "Operational Excellence". Overall, the experience up until the final interview was positive. It seems that the hiring manager has the final say so Loblaw Digital should consider adding a 30-minute conversation with the hiring manager right at the beginning so the candidate's time is not wasted.

      Interview

The interview process consists of the following rounds - 1. Recruiter screen - Basic questions on profile , my recruiter was in a rush and didnt talk much about the team as well, mostly if the tech stack matched 2. Senior manager/Director screen - This was supposed to be 1hr long but instead was 30mins as told to me by the senior manager. Questions were majorly around my experience , conflict management, etc. By the end , she asked me if I always work with architects and told that at Loblaws we only work with architects when its something critical/complicated enough. The expectation from the managers is to provide technical guidance to the team, which is essentially a "glorified lead" trap 3. System design round - I was then moved to a system design round with an architect who was very knowledgeable and this was the most meaningful conversation I had in the entire process with the company. 4. Hiring manager round - I had this round with the skip level manager, Senior Director in this case who basically asked me behavioral and people management questions. In one part of the conversation it came up that I have worked with QA teams as a separate vertical and at Loblaws DEVs work in the QA capacity as well, but otherwise the conversation went really well and smooth. My process ended in 2 weeks and by the end, the feedback I received for rejecting me was that I had not worked with organizations/teams wherein DEVs worked in QA capacity as well. This was never brought up as an absolute requirement for the role and it was merely circumstantial that I had worked with companies where QA verticals are separate. But this was held against me despite my qualifications and performance in the interviews. Extremely disappointed with such people who are so senior in the management ladder but really are missing true leadership experience
