I applied online for multiple positions at the closest Macy's near my house. About 2 days later, I received an email asking me to schedule an interview appointment for myself. I chose the earliest time at my convenience, because I heard that there are limited jobs and they pretty much offer jobs to those who they like on the spot. So even if you did a good job during the interview, but your appointment time was really late, there's a chance that there may not be any positions left.
Anywho, so the day before the interview, I prepared myself by looking over the sample questions listed on this site. I was relieved when I found that most of the questions they ask are the same, EXCEPT they word it differently a bit, so you have to be careful and listen.
the questions they ask me were:
1) Why did you choose to apply at Macy's?
2) Tell me of a time when you are working in an area that is constantly changing?
3) Tell me how you would go about selling a Macy's Credit Card during a purchase? What you say to the person to make them want to sign up for a Macy's Credit Card?
4) Have you ever witness a worker, friend, classmate, family member, or etc that did something wrong? How did you handle the situation and was the outcome?
5) Have you ever been in a situation in which you had to convince a customer/person into buying your product? What tactics did you use to persuade the buyer to purchase your item?
Then they went about to explain information about the Macy's company. They are going to ask you if you are available to work during Black Friday and the week of Christmas. I will advise you to say yes, because they want someone who is dedicated and will have a flexible schedule. However, during orientation, if you are lucky you may select the shifts that work best for you. So far Macy had been very accommodating, but maybe that has to do with the fact that I was one of the first from the list to get hired so there was numerous time slots still available.
You are able to have a hunch about whether you are going to get the job, when the interview person agrees with what you said, nods their head lots, and ask you for your availability towards the end of your interview. I came early and still had to wait for 2 person. You should aim for arriving at your interview place about 15 min early just in case you get called in early than expected, because the person in front of you did not show up.
During that time I was waiting, I was talking with the other candidates to be friendly and the other candidates actually told me that the two people in front of me was not offered a job. So, I was pretty nervous when entering, because so many people was getting no job offers at the spot and their interview was very very quick like less than 10 minutes.
However, what I think helped me win the job was the fact that I was very friendly and confident. Also, it helps if you have questions to ask them. Likewise, if you don't have an answer to a question that asks to describe a time, then just say what you would do hypothetically :) Though, most importantly BE YOURSELF! And try to answer the questions rather quickly.
Good luck everyone! :]
