Interview
The first time I applied with Macy's for a holiday position, I had a wonderful experience during the interview. The interviewer, one of the managers, was very nice and encouraging. The questions were reasonable and not too difficult to answer- most of them dealt with how to handle customer service situations including upselling products, encouraging customers to apply for store credit cards, handling interpersonal conflicts, etc. During my two months as a seasonal employee, I enjoyed working for the company and was encouraged repeatedly by the managers to reapply after my seasonal job ended. I was excited at the prospect of advancing my career doing something I enjoy.
However, my second interview for a regular part time position was not what I expected. The interviewer was unfriendly. I did my best to ignore this. I answered the same questions as I had in the previous interview, but I made sure to plug in information about my positive experiences with the company. She smugly informed me that "I was not cut out for sales." and that "I wasn't perky enough." I was shocked that someone representing Macy's could be so unprofessional to a job applicant that was invited to interview for the position.
I won't discount any entire company based on one woman's poor behavior, but despite my positive experience working for this Macy's in the past, I will not be applying at this particular location again.

I was able to interview immediately upon walk in, after completing a written application. There was a small group of friendly and competent human resources staff available at the time.
I applied online. The process took 2 days. I interviewed at Macy's (La Jolla, CA) in Mar 2022
Interview
I started with a "virtual", interview that included recorded video questions. I went through all of the many required tests and online video recordings and received a phone call from a woman to come in the very next day for an interview.
Note: When I filled out the online application I checked the box that indicated I could work evenings and weekends.
The woman who greeted me acted like she was surprised that I could only work part time hours.
I stayed calm and polite, I smiled I made eye contact which she rarely returned and unfortunately, her disgruntled mood never improved. The interview was actually a big waste of time for both of us. If she did not like my recorded video interview or the fact that I just wanted to work part time, then why did she contact me for an interview?
