      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at MariaDB in Apr 2023

      Interview

The initial interview consisted of a few questions about my background, but nothing like a knowledge test. Almost all of the time was spent describing the role and their process in detail. lt's variable availability, part-time, contract work I was told there would be a 10 hour intro project at 44/hr including shadowing and a demo project. We did the demo project first, but that was as far as I got before a short rejection interview. I did get paid for 10 hours, so I was thankful for that. To put things into perspective, from the first interview to my rejection took 2 months. I found the results of the demo project to be frustrating. Without revealing the actual task, it was a very detail-oriented assignment. I put a lot of work into getting the hard requirements right. The second aspect of it was very open to interpretation. You were not allowed clarification on that interpretation. In the exit interview, they alluded to my rejection being due to my interpretation being different than theirs. I have a background in software engineering, and was new to technical writing at the time. Shortly afterward, I landed a position in technical writing with higher pay + benefits with another job I applied for. Even now, I don't know that I could have done better with the information given. Overall, I think it was a positive experience. I would take into consideration that you could get lucky, but you could also end up talking to them over 2-3 months and still be rejected (but paid). Keep interviewing!

      Interview

Organized process that included a paid test project and shadowing of two team members (contract for 10 hours @ $44/hour with SOW). The interviewers did not ask many questions about my experience nor my soft skills in the intro call - it was more about their internal processes and expectations, such as a warning to ask thoughtful questions without being too talkative during shadowing. The contract approval process was lengthy, however, I was warned that would be the case. Was told that I would be able to give feedback of the process and that I would receive feedback of the written deliverable that I submitted. I received a general rejection over email in lieu of an anticipated final zoom call. Ultimately, they did not adhere to the SOW by failing to give feedback for the deliverable and not asking for my feedback as was expected.
