I applied online through the careers website and within a week I had received an email asking me to come in for an interview. I arrived 10 minutes early for the interview wearing suit trousers, a blouse, a pair of flats and my hair down.
My interviewer then approached me and guided me to the hotel bar area where my interview commenced. I was asked to run through my CV and explain why I would be a good fit for the position, which I did. However, after that she did not ask me any relevant questions and proceeded to tell me that my clothes were inappropriate for the interview and that she’d love to interview me again if and when I was willing to take it more seriously and dress ‘appropriately’.
I had believed that the Marriott organisation had an inclusive and forward-thinking mind set, however unfortunately that was not the impression I got. I personally would like to work in a place that values me for my hard-work, intelligence and above all integrity, rather than whether I am wearing suit trousers or a skirt.
My feedback and advice for Marriott is that you seriously think about your interview conduct as I felt heavily patronised and insulted. Perhaps informing candidates on how you would like them to dress for an interview before they arrive? Rather than passive aggressively commenting on how what they are wearing to the interview is inappropriate? I additionally believe you are going to be missing out on some excellent candidates due to your own prejudices.
