      Software Engineer Interview

      Sep 25, 2013
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Irvine, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Masimo (Irvine, CA) in Sep 2013

      Interview

After applying online, my 1st contact was an email with a programming test and self evaluation. No phone screen with an HR rep or anyone. So right off the bat I'm a little concerned about this company, so I research them here on glassdoor. It takes Masimo 4 weeks to review my programming test. I'm not kidding, 4 weeks. I've reviewed many programming tests when working for other employers, it's a 10 to 20 minute job. After 4 weeks, I'm contacted by an HR rep who wants to setup a one-on-one, hour long screen onsite with an engineer. At the onsite interview, I meet with an engineer who seems very solid and is a good guy, but he hasn't reviewed my programming test. So he has no idea if I can write code or follow instructions at all. The interview mainly consists of programming tests and seeming if I can follow instructions, which is what the initial test was supposed to cover. After it takes a week for HR to get positive feedback from the initial interview, it takes an additional week for HR to schedule a full 8 hours of interviews with everyone from the engineering staff, managers, and even VPs. At this point my internal BS detector is going off like a 3 alarm fire. At this all day interview, the 2nd interviewer is out, so a substitution is made. No problem there, things happen. After this 2nd interview, which in my view is going very well, the interview process is abruptly stopped because "something came up". From right there I know they didn't like some aspect of me. After 2 weeks I get a call from the HR rep. I'm told even though the team liked me, they didn't know where I'd fit in the organization. From the 3 engineers I met, I liked this company. The guys seemed reasonable, rational, and smart. Clearly the HR and management team need a lot of work. I was told during the interview process, few candidates are able to complete the initial programming test and complete it correctly using well written code and to the spec given, all of which I was told, I was able to do. I was also told they have a very difficult time hiring people. I can't imagine why.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

None really. I found all the questions to be reasonable and of the type I normally ask during interviews. If you're a good engineer you really shouldn't have any technical challenges. If you're not a good engineer, it's going to come out very quickly.

take home exam, phone screening and final in person technical interview. the whole procedure is fair. the take home exam is a bit tricky, not that it's difficult to resolve, it's they focus on trivial steps.
