Whole process took little over 2 months; I got contacted by HR to schedule a screening interview with a hiring manager (VP of marketing); after that I had a call with a marketing person that would be passing responsibilities to me, then I met separately with each of 2 BD Directors, then the President (Westford), again with VP of Marketing that flew in from Buffalo, and HR. Following that I was asked to take personality/IQ test. After that I got a final call from VP of Global Communications who said they would love to have me on board. It was a bit shocking to me that we went through 8 interviews without Materion mentioning the salary even once. Finally, after the last phone interview, HR reached out to see what I'm looking for as far as pay goes. I gave them my range. Over a week later I got a call from the hiring manager, who was a little bit surprised I was asking for “so much” and wanted to know why … ?!??!.
My pay expectations were within the industry average for the responsibilities that were expected of me for that geographical location (expenses) and included 6% increase to compensate for state taxes I would have to pay while working in MA. Materion was offering 30% less. 30% less than industry average! Benefits were also very disappointing and at least a decade behind the industry standards. Most companies start with 3 weeks of PTO, Materion gives 6 days. That’s if you start January through April; it is 0 (zero) days if you get hired after August 1st.
Overall, a lot of resources and time were wasted in this process – and judging by that – it is not the best company to work for. Most people were very nice, but it takes more than that to have satisfied employees and healthy culture.
