- Pros:
Most of the hiring managers I met were very friendly and nice. They had a sincere interest in understanding you - your background, your style, your goals etc. They were also very responsive with answering questions, and are super generous about giving feedback about how to succeed in the next-steps during the interview. The package is also kinda competitive.
- Cons:
The overall hiring process was very lengthy and unprofessional from time to time. I did three phone screens with three different individuals, while the two of them asked similar questions. One of them had to reschedule the call literarily last minute. The entire phone screen part took like two months...
Then I received a phone interview invitation with a recruiter to discuss about next steps and logistics. The recruiter didn't show up on time for the phone call and got back to me like an hour later saying that his meeting ran overtime. During the call (last-min scheduled again), we clarified the next step was to schedule an on-site interview, my expected timeline, etc. I was told to do a 45-min presentation onsite with very specific instructions.
So, with the timeframe in mind (within the next two weeks), I reached out to hiring managers to discuss about topics, according to their instruction, and made the draft. While preparing for the presentation, I followed up once with the recruiter 1st week after the phone call, and got the reply that they would try to schedule within the next day or so. Heard back nothing after another week; Followed up again with both email and phone call, and only after that the recruiter told me that they decided not to move forward - a super generic email.
It seems to me uncommon to cancel an agreed onsite interview, after that many rounds of conversations without an explicit reason. While I do understand that recruiting is complicated and many factors that are out of control of any individual come into play, what is unacceptable to me is the unprofessionalism and unmindfulness throughout the process. It does't seem to me that they understand and appreciate the effort and time commitment a candidate put into a job search process.
- Overall:
I have interviewed many companies, small and large, and I found even startups with only a team of 8 do a better job than MathWorks in the hiring process - at least they show respect to your time.
I would not recommend applying for this company - not worth the time and effort you will have to spend.
