      Project Associate Interview

      Sep 12, 2017
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Ann Arbor, MI
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Mathematica (Ann Arbor, MI) in Jun 2017

      Interview

I applied for the position online in mid-March. Almost a month later, a phone interview with the hiring manager was scheduled, during which he explained the position, gave an outline of the company and the work they do, and asked various questions about my experience as it relates to the nature of the position. The call ran about 25 minutes. It wasn't until the very end of May that I finally contacted the HR rep via email to inquire as to whether I would be invited for an on-site interview. My experience on-site was overall positive. I arrived at 8:30am, and left by 3:00pm. Lunch was provided. I met with about 12 different individuals, including the hiring manager himself. It seemed that they were mostly interested in answering all of my questions (which, after my third interaction, most of my questions had been answered...) and less interested in ASKING questions. It didn't seem that any of the interviewers really got to know me or my abilities during the brief 20 minutes I spent with each of them. Over a week later I received an email from HR requesting that we schedule a brief phone call so that she could share the results of the interview with me. I responded immediately, but it took her over 2 days to finally get around to phoning me. After the first 24 hours of waiting for an email response or phone call, I resolved that no one would put a candidate through such a torturous wait only to reject them, and that if I was not being given an offer, one would have mercy and let me know ASAP via email. This likely contributed to my surprise when HR finally got back with me only to let me know during a 20 second phone call that they were no longer pursuing my candidacy. Frankly, this is why I have given a negative review, as I thought it was mildly cruel. I would have STRONGLY preferred that she let me know in the initial email, and offered to schedule a phone call if I had follow up questions or something. I mean, come on.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Mathematica

      Interview

My first interview was with another Project Associate. He had clearly come straight from another meeting and was very flustered and uninterested in speaking with me. He told me he didn't read my resume, and made little effort to get to know me more. My second interview was a 3.5 hour process with several PMs and a final discussion with HR. Albeit lengthy, the process was fairly informal and more conversational. Prior to this interview, I informed HR that I received an offer from another company and would need a final decision from Mathematica by X date. The rep said it wouldn't be a problem, however, Mathematica never followed up with me and left me hanging. They also asked for my availability, and then proceeded to schedule the interview at a time I had specified as unavailable. While I understand we're all overwhelmed with work, Mathematica continued to reflect poor company culture & complete disregard for the people they interview.

      Question 1

Why are you interested in Mathematica? Why are you interested in PM? How would you handle a difficult client? What would you do if a PM stopped responding and you had an upcoming deadline?

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at Mathematica in Apr 2021

      Interview

After submitting a resume and cover letter for the role online, I was contacted via email to set-up a phone screening with a member of the Talent Acquisition Team. The conversation was very friendly and informative, focusing primarily on confirming who I was and expectations around the role, location and salary band. From there, I was scheduled for a morning of interviews with 3 members of the team the role would be under as well as a Talent Acquisition Director. The interview process lasted 2.5 hours in which I shared relevant aspects of my career experience to date and was given ample time to inquire about aspects of the company culture, team structure, workload, tools and objectives.
