      Application

I applied through college or university. The process took 5 months. I interviewed at Mathematica (Cambridge, MA) in May 2020

      Interview

I originally applied to work at Mathematica through the SLAC program at my college. I was invited to interview with an HR representative during their DC recruiting day. This initial interview was pleasant and informational: we talked about my interests and why I was considering Mathematica, as well as some of the key projects that Mathematica was working on. A few weeks after this initial informational interview, I was invited to participate in a phone screening with a hiring manager. The questions they asked included: what attracted you to Mathematica, what kinds of projects would you be interested in working on, tell me about your past experience. They also asked some more administrative questions about which office I would prefer to work in and when I would be available to start. About a week later I spoke with a member of the HR team to confirm my continued interest in the position, explain their benefit offerings, and invite me to participate in a final round of interviews. Normally, these interviews would have been in person in their Cambridge office, but because of COVID-19 they were conducted virtually. Before these final interviews, members of the HR team made sure to provide me with a list of people I would be interviewing with, a schedule of what to expect, and helpful information on navigating the virtual interview process. They were incredibly prompt, helpful, and accommodating of my schedule. For this final round of interviews, I spoke with researchers and analysts working in their health sector, other health associates, and a member of the HR team. In total, the interviews lasted 4 hours. The interviewers all seemed eager to get to know me and excited to talk about their work at Mathematica. At the end of each interview, the interviewers made sure to leave time for me to ask them questions. I feel like I gained a good sense of the values of the company during the process.
