I applied online. The process took 4 months. I interviewed at McKinsey & Company in Apr 2010
Interview
I applied online. After two weeks I received an invitation to take a math test in their office. This first test consisted of very basic problems to be completed in a short period of time. Two more weeks had elapsed before i got a second invitation to go through a written business case and a logic test. Then a fit interview was scheduled. I was told to present one situation in which I demonstrated leadership skills, one situation when i convinced someone of my point of view and a last situation when i set a very hard goal and i went for it. All those stories had to be divided into chapters each one with its respective title (that's when creativity skills were first demanded...).
Finally, i was invited to the "McKinsey Day" which took place in a hotel. An entire day full of activities encompassing classic case interviews similar to the ones contained on manuals being sold here and a more advanced written business case (which i couldn't complete at all because of the short time). The last scheduled activity was a role play. In this stage one consultant played the role of your boss and your client. You are told some data/background story by your boss and once you have discussed it with him, you go see the client who has ideas which are not in agreement with what was previously discussed with your boss. The way you figure out how to solve by yourself this conflict is evaluated.
When i thought the day was over, i was told to wait and two more 1:1 interview cases were set up with partners. The first was to estimate the number of postmen in a city that i knew well (I enjoyed myself in this problem and even more after checking the real number on the internet...lol). The second one was a business case on mix of products and operations. In other words, nothing that we couldn't expect from a consulting firm.
First you get an HR Round, then 2 back to back interviews then 3 interviews. The overall process took around 2-3 weeks, it was not very difficult very fast turnaround

Positive experience until the super day. The scheduling was quite long and they gave me a month's gap between my previous round and my final round. But overall everyone speaks eloquently and thinks logically. My interactions with senior partners are also very positive; they ask insightful, probing questions and were encouraging throughout the interview. I thought I smashed it, but one of the partners called me the other day and rejected me.
After submitting my application in their portal. In about two days I recevied the link to do their Solve assessment, The assessment had three games. I was however not selected for the next rounds.
