I was contacted by a recruiter and we had a first phone interview and afterwards I sent my CV and a cover letter to the recruiter who forwarded it to the HR department. Afterwards I had several more “pep talk”-phone calls with the recruiter while I was preparing for personality tests and other tests they call “games”. I think I received a total of 6-7 documents that the recruiter said was “good to read” about how they want McKinsey people to think, act and behave. I passed the games and the tests and due to COVID all upcoming interviews would be held online. At this stage a HR representative also “helped me” prepare. First I had a video call with a girl my age who was working in a similar role as the one I was applying for, this was just a preparation call/ mock interview. At this stage I was wondering if I would ever come to a real interview. After this 3 interviews were booked each with a personal experience part and a case. All of the interviews were with more senior consultants one of which worked at the office I was applying for. The other worked at other McKinsey offices in Europe. I received very good feedback from all but one who said he didn’t find me structured enough during my case. I had another interview with a 4th person and at this point I was just drained. The interview went okey but the feedback I got was that they thought I didn’t want this enough to be the best consultant so they couldn’t give me an offer. According to HR the interviews with these consultants was the last step since we already talked salary.
Summary: You put a lot of time into the recruiting process, they say they want “normal” people and not just the super selling-all-American-consultants. But from my impression that’s just what they want. They want you to be grateful every day for giving you this opportunity. Throughout the process the external recruiter and HR representative emailed me or called me several times a week to check in.
