      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at MetaLab (Victoria, BC) in Feb 2020

      Interview

The interview process was quick and extremely biased. They ask filtering questions with the application submission clearly used to weed out LGBTQ+ candidates. The process is very difficult when you're up against systemic homophobia. One should have expected better, however clearly a company connected to Slack would take this stance.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We're grateful every time someone is interested in MetaLab and we invite all feedback that allows us to improve the candidate experience. Last year, we introduced voluntary, anonymous demographic questions to our application process, including gender, ethnicity, and sexuality. Candidates' response, or choice to not respond, is entirely voluntary and does not affect their application, nor is there any way for MetaLab to view a candidates' responses to the demographic questions. When candidates choose to respond to the demographic questions, responses are provided via our applicant tracking system in aggregate only and remain entirely anonymous. Beyond that, screening anyone out of the process based on these factors goes directly against everything we believe in. MetaLab stands against all forms of oppression, discrimination, and inequity faced by underrepresented groups. We ask the voluntary, anonymous demographic questions to both help ensure underrepresented groups in tech are represented in our hiring pipelines and to reduce any barriers or unconscious bias based on their identity as they move through our hiring process. Thanks again for your feedback. We'll review the voluntary, anonymous demographic questions in our application process to see if there's an opportunity for clarity on the anonymity and purpose behind them. Please also feel free to share more about your experience with me, as we’re always looking for ways to do better: elexa@metalab.co, I'm the Director of People Ops at MetaLab.

I applied online. I interviewed at MetaLab in Mar 2020

      Interview

The process is quite lengthy, but absolutely within the standard of tech companies, startups, and digital agencies nowadays. There's a test to do and it's compensated. Everyone, from the recruiter to the design directors I talked with (there were 4, I think) were very friendly, asked a fair amount of questions, but they never tried to trick me in any way. Overall a positive experience and it didn't take too much time in between steps.

      Question 1

questions revolved around my experience, and then mostly about my tests. Why I took certain decisions, etc.
