      Intern Interview

      Feb 4, 2016
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Edinburgh, Scotland
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Metaswitch (Edinburgh, Scotland) in Jan 2016

      Interview

First stage is an online application that can easily take up to 4 hours to complete (you are not allowed to upload a CV or cover letter). Final stage is an onsite interview. This involves 3 tests where you are asked to find patterns and work with shapes and numbers. There are way too many questions for the 20 minutes given for each test. Right after this are 3 more tests that are designed to analyse your thought process, however, these are very poorly designed and they are extremely subjective. Finally, as soon as you are done with all 6 tests, and of course by which time you are likely to be quite exhausted, comes an interviewer for a 30-minute interview. You are asked to explain your solutions to previous exercises which is fine, however they keep pushing you for more and more ideas when there is nothing else to say. Then there is a bit of a discussion on you as a person, but for me this was quite brief, and my interviewer didn't seem to care about any of my previous qualifications.

      Question 1

Talk me through your CV (even though they never asked for my CV and therefore had no copy of it)

Thanks for your feedback and I’m sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your interview at Metaswitch. It is possible to upload your CV and cover letter to our application and the initial form should be really quick and easy as it only asks for your name, contact details and 3 tick box questions. We do ask a few more detailed written questions at a later stage in the application process which I agree can take some time however they are really important from our point of view as they help us to get an idea of which areas of the business candidates may be interested in. It’s a shame to hear that you felt our in–house tests were subjective. We design them so that they can be answered with a range of different approaches and answers. This is so that logical, creative or technical candidates alike can all come up with solutions without having deep programming knowledge. We have had a number of feedback comments from candidates that our interview sessions can be intense and for this reason the number of tests have been reduced in our first interview sessions for graduates – now there are only 3 tests throughout the morning. Lastly it’s disappointing to hear that you didn’t feel your interviewer covered all the bases. While previous experience can be a good indicator, for grad and intern positions we put more of a focus on natural aptitude for problem solving. Thanks again for your feedback and best of luck with your job search and future career. Max - HR

      Application

I applied online. The process took 5 weeks. I interviewed at Metaswitch (Enfield, England)

      Interview

Filled in very lengthy online application form and did online tests. Invited to onsite interview in headquarters in Enfield. Was in a group of 6 people and started with an employee giving a presentation lasting around 30 minutes. The assessments started with an IQ test with around 40 minutes to complete - I completed around 60% of the questions before running out of time. We then had 2 subsequent questions consisting of a problem statement and various questions most of which being open-ended, suggest a method for ... etc. The first question was basically about passing messages around a network, efficiency, how to know for sure receiver has received the message. The second was about coding a computer to play a variant of blackjack and what approach/algorithm to use. The whole game tree is too large to evaluate but you can use probabilistic methods to guarantee optimality at each turn. The interviews were rather mundane, though the interviewers were very friendly. The first interview involved discussing the test and a few extension questions which were relatively straightforward. In the second interview they presented a variant to the blackjack problem which was basically the same but with different values for payoffs. Overall the experience was mixed, the onsite IQ test was a little out of place, the questions were relatively interesting but the interview discussions and questions were not.
