Initial phone screen, the lady seemed to be reading from a check-list of broad questions, some related to the my areas of expertise, but many were not.
An HR type person called back a few days later, said there are a couple of possible matches, and described one of them as Project Manager role, (but from the job description I thought I met only 1 of 3 main criteria, not even close to meeting the other two). Though there was not a match, I guess I will go anyway just because it was MS (plus I already had a job offer in hand without having to relocate)
She asked my high level salary expectation range, I told her about my other offer and gave those rough numbers, she agreed it was within her range, and then asked to fly out to MS main campus for face-to-face interview in about 1 week as I had to join my other offer in 2 weeks. (then sent me email details how to book flight/hotel using Microsoft contact).
Redmond Campus interview -
4 individual meetings: (1st) with Senior recruiter (same lady who called last) - nothing technical, mostly HR type discussion, she said 3 technical interviews today, and a tentative 4th one with the department manager. Then off to (2nd) with Program manager - covered both technical and PM type questions in depth for about an hour, also had some "IQ" type questions totally unrelated to the subject matter - guy seemed generally happy with my answers. then off to (3rd) with Group Program manager - again technical, probing in to SQL/database/security side, guy seemed very happy with my answers. Next to the (4th) with a 2nd Group Program manager - discussion related to actually building a software product and bringing it to market - I had zero experience on this side, quickly evident to both of us that this role is not right fit. We both frankly talked about this not the right fit. He was doing email/IM in between, possible deciding on the 5th (tentative) interview with department manager.
I was asked to wait in the lobby while the last guy checked with Department head. He came down and said unfortunately the Dept. Head had a dental appt. (or something lame like that) so could not meet with me today. (I had previously read other posts that this was a standard MS way to cut short a sequence of interviews if they felt in the middle that things were not going well)
Heard back from Sr. recruiter a couple of days later this one did not work out, but she still thought there were a couple of other close matches and asked me if she can forward my resume to a few other group managers. Never heard back.
Overall pleasant experience. My only thought at that time was that MS has so much money that even though I met only 1/3 criteria for this job, they just decided to fly me in. I am guessing that they flew in may be 5-6 other people with close enough matches and likely picked someone who met 3/3 criteria.
