      Intern Interview

      Dec 18, 2015
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Redmond, WA
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Microsoft (Redmond, WA) in Jan 2015

      Interview

Program Manager - Did a phone interview and was invited for a second round in person interview on the Microsoft campus. Was interviewed by three different people throughout the day. I expected more questions like the type I've posted below, but the two other interviewers asked me exclusively about previous non-tech jobs on my resume which really threw me off. I've worked for a college access program for high-achieving low-income high school students and one of the interviewers asked me about ways in which the organization could measure its impact. She didn't seem to like that my answers had to do with following and evaluating program graduates' success. At the end of the interview she mentioned that other ways of evaluating its success would be to measure racial and economic diversity growth at colleges as well as leadership positions across various types of careers. I modestly disgreed with her because the organization is exceptional at what it does, but it does it with under 100 students a year. Attributing diversity growth in such broad areas to the organization isn't particularly good at saying anything specific about the organization, whereas following program alumni throughout college and their careers and evaluating their success is more directly related to the organization. The other question was about developing ways to make a small phone/computer repair business that I run better. Wasn't sure exactly what the interviewer was looking for so I talked about expansion, quality assurance, customer guarantees, and developing an app and online presence.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

How would you design the backup feature for windows phone? (As we spoke more she also asked about more concrete things like how often does it back up/what files does it back up/

      Interview

The entire process only had two rounds and it was really simple. Each round was around 45 minutes to an hour with a current Microsoft engineer and they just ask you a typical leetcode style question. There was also a behavioral round that was really simple.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

The first round was a typically leetcode question that was really easy. The second round was a little bit harder. It was about having a nxn square made out of 0s and 1s and it wants you to compute what the square looks like if it was rotated.
