Bizarre and unpleasant. I was invited for an initial interview with a recruiter. I'm 95% sure the recruiter was a human, but honestly, I cannot say with certainty. The conversation was 30 minutes, and I'm not exaggerating when I say that 25 of those 30 minutes were spent listening to the recruiter robo-read an avalanche of legalese nonsense to me, like the safety announcements on an airplane, but even longer, like "Hi and thanks for connecting with us here at Microsoft. At this time we're going to review the basic needs of the role, discuss your background, outline salary expectations, and I'll leave some time at the end for anything else we want to cover today. If at any time you have any questions, feel free to let me know. Please be aware that the salary range for a given role is determined by blah blah blah blah blah," and this went on for a solid ten minutes at the top. Then he asked a series of long and yet vague yes/no questions about my background, and the convo concluded with another ten minutes of "During the next few weeks, we'll be reviewing other applicants, and we appreciate your patience as we do so, as well as with any pending correspondence, wherein responses may be delayed or brief. If at any time you are offered a competing role, please promptly inform us so that we may blah blah blah blah."
It was altogether a very un-human experience, and it felt like it told me a lot about what it would probably be like to work there (I have friends who work or have worked for Microsoft and say it's not great). I was somewhat relieved to have been rejected only a few days later.
