Applied through a job consultant. In person interviews were quickly scheduled within a week after I shared my resume. I was interviewed by a Director of Product Engineering and VP of Product Engineering.
The same day, I received feedback that the interviewers were happy with my candidature and that they have given a go ahead for continuing with the process. I was informed that they would like to schedule the next round of interview that will be conducted by VP of Product Management, who is based in the US. The next round was quickly scheduled.
My interview with the VP of Product Management was the most disappointing. As soon as I got on the call and we greeted each other, the first thing that the VP told me was that my candidature cannot be considered for Director of Product Management as my profile was not suitable. The VP told me that he can consider my profile for the position of Product Line Manager. The VP asked me if I wanted to continue with the interview or not.
I wanted to see where this leads to. Hence, I agreed to continue. The VP then told me that I will have to go through the interview process again as this is for PLM position. I agreed. Subsequently, further interviews were scheduled.
This time, I was interviewed by two Product Line Managers, individually and in person. Then I received the feedback from their HR that I was over qualified for PLM position. The PLMs who interviewed me apparently suggested that my resume be considered for more senior positions, such as Director of Product Management.
Few questions bothered me all through the process.
1. Why were the Director and VP of Product Engineering unaware of the requirements for a Director position?
2. If they felt I am not suitable, why did they give a go ahead?
3. What did the VP of Product Management learn about me within 2 minutes of talking to me that he discovered that I am unfit for a Director position?
4. If the VP of Product Management already determined that my profile doesn't suit the role that I applied for, why did he take the pain of calling for an interview in the first place?
5. Why did the PLMs have to determine separately that I am over qualified for a PLM? Why couldn't they get that feedback from the other Director and VP of Product Engineering who talked to me earlier in the process?
Hence, after spending two vacation days to attend their interview, a month long process and after being interviewed by 5 different people, what I understood is that
1. This organization has no idea what they want. Everyone involved in the process has their own view of what they want. The glaring communication gap (and tussle?) between their Product Development and Product Management organisations was evident.
2. They don't bother to exchange notes. They just ask the candidate to turn up for a face to face interview. They have no consideration for the candidate's time and resources.
3. I am over qualified to be a PLM and under qualified to be a Director. Ironically, they don't have a role defined between PLM and Director. Very funny.
