I had a pleasant interview with the initial recruiter and the hiring manager. They were both amazing and we all really aligned on the vision for this role and what I could bring (as a swe from a faang who had previous experience as a swe in biotech/medical). Everything was really smooth and fast until I met with one of the Bioinformatics Engineers on their team as part of my final interviews round. They had no questions prepared, was thinking of things off the top of their head, and was generally disrespectful. It was very clear to me that them and the hiring manager (who I presume is their boss) did NOT align on what the role was really about. There was no time for me to ask them questions. Moderna also did not give me any info beforehand on what was going to be expected in these interviews. There should have been something. The second Bioinformatics Engineer I met with was a lot more professional and asked all the right questions. However, they asked me to keep my answers short so they could ask more questions. I’d recommend asking more simple questions if you want simple answers. I’ve interviewed for all sorts of companies over the last few years and this was one of the worst experiences I’ve had. Generally unprepared and disrespectful bunch. The role was described to me as more of a site reliability role on the bioinformatics team, it was definitely not. They did not embody their “Moderna Mindsets” at all. It was implied that they need help ASAP meaning that there would be no time to gauge their system, understand the tools and software, and develop diagrams and plans. This means they actually need a scientist who has worked with said software before exclusively, and not a software engineer who specialized in site reliability and infrastructure maintenance. Meeting with the team was foreshadowing of what would have probably been a terrible work experience. VERY UNWELCOMING ATMOSPHERE.
