I recently had the unfortunate experience of interviewing for a corporate position at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), and I must say that the entire process left me extremely dissatisfied. I feel compelled to share my thoughts and frustrations in this Glassdoor review to provide potential candidates with a realistic perspective.
1. Extremely lengthy process: From the moment I submitted my application in March until June, a decision was still pending. The prolonged duration of the process was unacceptable and showcased a lack of respect for the applicants' time and interest. It is discouraging and disheartening to invest so much time and effort into an interview process that seems to drag on indefinitely.
2. Poor communication: Throughout the entire interview process, the Museum of Modern Art exhibited a disappointing lack of communication. From the initial stages to the final decision, there was an apparent disregard for timely updates and clear instructions. I found myself constantly reaching out for updates, only to receive vague responses or no response at all. It is essential for a reputable institution like MoMA to improve its communication practices to ensure a professional and respectful experience for candidates.
3. Lack of structure during the interview process: The interview process lacked a clear structure and direction. It was surprising that the museum did not utilize behavioral-based questions, which are widely recognized as an effective method for assessing a candidate's abilities and experiences. The absence of such questions made it challenging to showcase relevant skills and provide comprehensive responses. This lack of structure reflects a disorganized approach to the hiring process.
4. Neglected reference checks: As part of their evaluation, the Museum of Modern Art requested references from me. However, to my disappointment, they failed to follow up or contact any of the references I provided. This lack of attention to a critical step in the hiring process demonstrates a lack of thoroughness and professionalism.
5. False expectations and shifting role scope: There was a sudden shift in the scope of the role discussed at the very end of the process. This misalignment and lack of transparency regarding the position's responsibilities and expectations is misleading and leaves candidates feeling misled and undervalued.
Overall, my experience interviewing for this position at the Museum of Modern Art was disappointing and frustrating. The process was excessively lengthy, with poor communication and a lack of structure. The museum failed to conduct reference checks and changed the scope of the role to include two different functions within one (I presume, in order to cut costs). Potential candidates should be aware of these issues and approach the interview process with caution. While MoMA is renowned for its artistic contributions, it is disheartening to witness such a subpar hiring experience. I hope that this feedback encourages the museum to reevaluate its interview procedures and improve communication with prospective candidates, ensuring a more respectful and professional approach in the future.
