It seems like the hiring team has some communication issues, both internally and externally.
I had two stages of interview, first was a phone screen and then did an on site interview with the team. During the phone screen I had mentioned that my current role was focused on research on in-vehicle cyber security and that the amount I code varies on a per project basis, but approximately 20-25% of the time being software development. The recruiters went ahead and set up an interview with the team.
At the on-site interview I talked with six engineers from the cyber security or related teams and most of the questions were system design related (e.g. what do you see as the weakest links in vehicle cyber security and how would you fix that?). At no point during any of these interviews with the team was there any coding questions at all. No white boarding, no algorithm questions, not even any discussion about what types of languages I use.
Two weeks later the recruiting team contacted me and indicated that they would not be moving forward because I wasn't a strong enough coder.
