I had a negative experience from a few years ago that I remember like it was yesterday. After a recruiter call and a 30-40 min technical phone screen for an NGS scientist/assay development role, I was subsequently flown out for an on-site interview. During the course of the day, it became clear they needed someone with more seniority as well as experience in industry R&D - I was a grad student at that time. The manager's manager was obviously frustrated that I had been flown out, and began yelling at someone in the hallway (probably the hiring manager) about why I was in the interview room. I was in that room, waiting for the interview to begin. He then entered the interview room red in the face and obviously angry - and over the course of the next few minutes of our interview, accused me of mis-representing myself on my CV. When he asked me why I wanted to work at Natera, I mentioned an impressive statistic that the recruiter had told me about their assay, and he became even more livid and demanded to know how I had obtained an apparently confidential statistic... Needless to say, as a naive and inexperienced student at that time, I was absolutely horrified, and hurt by the lack of sensitivity and absence of professionalism that was on display. Thank goodness I did not let it ruin more than one day of my life. Senior leadership who interviewed me are still working there, so I wonder how much has changed.
