I was initially contacted by a software engineering manager that came across my application. We chatted for a little while about my education and project history. I have strong experience in all of the programming languages they were looking for and more. He asked me to email him a copy of my resume and transcript, and he would get back to me in a say or two. By the end of our talk, both of us were optimistic about my candidacy. I received a call the next day from the same manager. Although he was impressed by my resume and experience, he "would not be able to explain hiring me, as my GPA is < 3.0/4.0" (a minimum GPA is not mentioned in the job posting). I explained that our grades are about 70%-80% based off test grades, which is something I, and many others, struggle with. However, I have a proven history of high remarks on other graded assignments, such as labs, projects, and homework. I made it a point to highlight that any courses related to programming received high grades, which he agreed. I also noted that much of my relevant project and programming experience was learned independently, and a transcript does not assess my technical skill or ability. Ultimately, his decision was made before even calling me, and I was not offered a job due to the GPA.
