      Senior Software Engineer Interview

      Mar 19, 2021
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at New Relic in Mar 2021

      Interview

I did the initial tech screen then moved forward with a virtual onsite with one of the teams. They scheduled all 6 hours in one day, the first one started at 7:30AM, the last one ended at 8PM. It seemed like the manager was looking for the experience of a Principal engineer. After the power day a recruiter from a 2nd team I had had previously done a manager call with asked if I would be interested continuing the process with the 2nd team instead of the 1st. I was, so they scheduled two more interviews, saying they weren't going to make me do another power day. I showed up to the first one on a brand new laptop and found out it was a pair programming session. One of the interviewers couldnt believe I owned a computer without a local environment set up, and acted extremely annoyed for the rest of the interview, I could tell this caught the second interviewer off guard. I was able set up in maybe 15 minutes and was able to complete most of the question I was told the next interview would be another pair programming session and it was just questions on my background All in all it was an incredible confusing experience that gave off the impression that New Relic is relatively disjoined internally. The recruiter that gave me the rejection call seemed to have no idea that I had done 7 interviews before interviewing with her team, but stated that the technical feedback was good and that she would reach out with another position that was opening on a 3rd team

      Interview

I recently interviewed for a senior position. The initial stages of the process, including the conversations with HR and the Hiring Manager, went well and were generally respectful and positive. However, the overall experience left me disappointed and felt not fully representative of real-world engineering work. The technical interview focused heavily on recalling specific data structure names from memory rather than evaluating problem-solving skills and engineering reasoning. I was clear about the properties required for the solution and mentioned that, in practice, I would verify the exact implementation details via the Java APIs. This approach, which reflects real professional behavior, was nevertheless treated negatively. During the interview itself, I received positive signals and comments such as “good job,” which made the final feedback feel somewhat inconsistent. Expectations were not clearly stated upfront: in the system design discussion, I thoroughly covered multiple valid scenarios and trade-offs, only to later be told that a single, narrowly defined solution was expected. Overall, I felt that the process favored rigid, pre-scripted answers over practical experience, clarity of reasoning, and real-world decision-making. I hope the interview process can be refined in the future to better align expectations and more accurately assess senior-level engineering skills.

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at New Relic (Bengaluru) in Sep 2025

      Interview

I was interviewed on September 1, and I had a very disappointing experience. First of all, the interviewer was a 2024 graduate who seemed to have taken the question directly from an online portal. The problem statement was poorly framed — it had no edge cases and no clearly defined input or output specifications. I had to ask multiple clarifying questions in order to properly understand the requirements and cover all possible cases. Despite this, I solved the problem well within the given time. Later the same day, I received feedback stating that I had asked "explained problem multiple times." This felt unfair, as the ambiguity lay in the poorly defined question itself. Based on this experience, I would not recommend any serious engineer to consider joining this company.
