I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at New Relic (Portland, OR) in May 2021
Interview
I was referred by a friend who works at the company.
The steps I went through:
1) 15 minute call with the recruiter--He gave me a brief overview of what the company does as well as allowing me to ask questions.
2) 30 minute call with the hiring manager--This call went into the specifics of the position as well as getting to know each other.
3) Coding challenge--A take home coding challenge. If they like your code, they will ask to meet with you for the...
4) Half day interview, including an interview with one of the architects, a code pairing challenge with the team I will be working with, an interview with the product manager for the hiring team, and behavioral questions from other engineering teams' managers. The interview ended with chatting with the hiring manager and the recruiter.
My experience was that, yes, they were making sure that I had technical capabilities, but they also wanted to make sure that I fit in with the team. In my case, it was just as much of an interview for the team as it was for me, since it gave me an idea of what working with the team full time would be.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
-How would you handle a difficult situation with a work colleague?
-Did you have to learn something new when doing the coding challenge?
The interview process includes application screening, recruiter call, technical or role-specific assessment, panel interviews, culture-fit discussion, reference checks, and final offer, ensuring candidates are evaluated fairly and thoroughly before hiring.
I applied online. I interviewed at New Relic (Portland, OR) in Jun 2026
Interview
I had a pretty unprofessional experience interviewing for the Software Engineer I role in Portland, OR.
After my initial recruiter call, it took nearly two weeks for the hiring manager to schedule the interview. During the interview, the hiring manager appeared disengaged and showed very little interest throughout the conversation.
Following the manager interview, I didn't receive any updates for about two weeks despite following the process. Eventually, the recruiter responded, saying, *"We are fortunate to have narrowed our search and will hold on moving candidates forward at this time,"* and I later received the formal rejection email.
Overall, the hiring process lasted 37 days. The lengthy delays, lack of communication, and overall candidate experience made the process feel unprofessional.
