      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Nordstrom (Seattle, WA) in Jul 2019

      Interview

I was referred to a position in the Nordstrom Operations Center, in which Engineers monitor systems and coordinate between teams if/when there is a high-severity incident. The position is listed as SRE, but that is, in actuality, a different team. There were three steps in the process after submitting my application: 1. HR phone screen - A quick, pleasant 15 - 30 minute chat with an HR Recruiter 2. Phone interview with hiring manager - This took about one hour. No real technical questions asked. No questions at all, really. The manager spent 45 minutes trying to sell me on the position before I asked him if he had anything to ask me. 3. In-Person interview, which consisted of four one hour interviews, back-to-back The in-person interview was off-putting. The first person to interview me was not prepared and, multiple times, said, "I should have prepared some questions." The second person was great. She was prepared with questions and I had a really great time working through whiteboard questions with her. The third person was the weirdest. His interview was during lunch. We spoke briefly about some technical questions but, once he saw the college I attended, he became fixated on only my alma mater and my politics. Per him, my school has a reputation for too progressive and too politically active. He spent the better part of 45 minutes badgering me with questions about the politics of the student body and if I "ever took part in the activism". It felt like an interrogation. I tried to deflect or, at least, turn it into a conversation, but it was very clear he was asking questions and didn't want to talk. Mind you, this person would be my peer, not my superior, and this was supposed to be the "social interview". Eventually his time was up. The fourth interview was inconsequential. After waiting five days, I was emailed by HR that they were going with someone else. I asked for feedback, but was ghosted.
