Was contacted by an enthusiastic internal NG recruiter a week or two after applying to a position in my city in NC. Set up an interview in Maryland about two weeks out because the recruiter said I would be interviewed by more people than I would in my hometown. NG bought my plane ticket, rental car, put me in a hotel, etc. Tons of travel and hassle, all in the middle of a school semester.
When I arrive at NG we sit in a room for 1 hr listening to enthusiastic employees brag about why NG is the best place to work. All the interviewees are then separated to their personal interviews.
I am met by one interviewer in person, and another on the phone FROM MY HOMETOWN. The whole reason I traveled to MD was to be received by multiple interviewers. I am in a bit of a shock and met by the bored stare of the interviewer that is giving the impression, "You're not going to work here, but I have to interview you anyway."
The two interviewers ask me about some projects on my resume. They ask me what my favorite programming language is and why. They seem disinterested in my response and do not care about the technical aspects of what I'm saying. Just feels like they're trying to pass the time, like they already found someone else for the role.
The whole process felt like a waste of resources on NG's part, and a HUGE waste of my time. I left feeling like I had dodged a bullet. Unfortunately, I think the interview would have gone much differently if I had been phone screened and not misinformed about traveling to Maryland.
