I applied through college or university. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Northwestern Mutual (Downers Grove, IL) in Apr 2014
Interview
Initial 30 minute phone interview. Pretty informal, mostly them explaining the history of the company and talking about the position, also a chance to ask pretty standard questions about your resume. After the initial phone interview, there is a 30 minute on-site interview with a College Unit Director (a full-time Financial representative that mentors the interns during the summer. Some basic behavioral questions were asked here. This is a sales position, so they are mostly interested in if you are personable and good with talking with people. They will ask you to do a market survey of some people you know, asking them some financial questions. You will return about a week later. Generally if they ask you to do a market survey, they will offer you a position.
There were four or five interviews, if you count the meeting with my future mentor. There were also a few personality assessments. Lots of paperwork. The finance industry is tightly regulated.
The first interview was easygoing and went fairly well. We talked a little on myself and what northwestern was all about. Because they wanted to see how I could fit in to their team and what I would bring.

Interview
The process was smooth and straight forward. A lot of behavioral based questions, but relaxed and low stress. First phase is a phone screening followed by a teams or in person meeting.
