I did extensive research on the company, their innovative technology and relevant disease states, so naturally, I was disappointed when an offer wasn’t extended. However, the interview process was fraught with red flags and it was only in hindsight that they became more apparent:
1. Extreme disorganization on the part of HR and interviewers
a) No one bothered to inform me that the initial phone interview had been scheduled with the hiring manager. Despite not being able to prepare, I was invited for onsite interviews
b) The receptionist was unaware of the on-site interviews that had been scheduled for BOTH rounds
c) Team members I had been scheduled to meet did not show up
2. Several employees dropped subtle hints regarding the lack of work-life balance and informed me that working during weekends is a common occurrence. I still very much enjoyed meeting everyone, except for the department lead that is...
3. The department lead was downright hostile. I can appreciate difficult and thought-provoking interview questions but this person came off so abrasive the interaction felt more like a confrontation than a conversation.
My assumptions about the company are obviously based on a limited number of interactions, but I now view the non-offer as a blessing in disguise.
