They only responded to me because I followed up and asked if I was being considered for the position. A family member referred me for the role, and the hiring manager had a friend he clearly wanted to give the job to despite a profound lack of qualifications. Employees at Opentrons are eligible for referral bonuses, so it seems like they rarely hire the right people and that many hiring managers simply secure bonuses for themselves as often as they can. I was given a 30 minute "interview" with the hiring manager only, who told me that I couldn't work in that role because my family member would be working closely with me. He told me this at the very end of the interview, and then failed to follow-up post interview as he claimed he would. The entire thing was a waste of time, as the hiring manager could have told me upfront that I wasn't being considered for the position. To make matters worse, HR confirmed that there was no issue with me working closely with a family member. This seems like basic nepotism. After discussion with other folks at the company, this individual wasn't even going to interview anyone but his buddy. He only paid lip service to other candidates because HR called him out on his failure to interview qualified candidates.
